Is being rich sin? Pt 1

Is it Okay for Christian to Be Rich?

The answer to that is an emphatic Yes and No!

How can this be? It is because so much of what we do is not based upon what we see it is based upon what is going on inside. What is our heart condition?

Paul said to Titus, “To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.” 1:15

This gives a wide field to those who have a pure heart before God. It seems to be saying that you can almost do anything and it will be okay.

God can make this statement because He trusts fully in the power of His word and the power of His Spirit. We are only reckoned as pure when we have come under the Lordship of Jesus and accepted His grace and salvation.

When that happens we are sealed with His Spirit and we want to do what is right. God tells us that He has given us both the strength and the desire to perform His will.

Now some who claim to be followers of Jesus will abuse this freedom but their deeds and their words will expose them for what they really are, fakes who are trying to use God for their own selfish ends.

God says of those who do not keep His way, “And the plowing of the wicked is sin” Prov 21:4

Amazing, something as harmless as plowing becomes sin when the person doing it has an unclean heart. A selfish heart is the same as an unclean wicked heart.

When you’re in that condition it doesn‘t matter what you do it’s wrong. You could be feeding the poor but God looks upon it as sin if your heart is proud and selfish.

So back to the original question, Is it okay for Christian to be rich? Yes, if their heart is pure.

Now it is very important that I issue some strong warnings. Because if your goal is to be rich, if that is your focus you are headed for grief. (More about this in the next article.)

If God has called you to be a business owner than you need to be watchful and on guard. I believe God wants our businesses to prosper but remember that it’s not your business you’re a steward of God’s business.

Don’t cling to your business, hold it loosely. Even Jesus did not cling to what was rightly His. He was willing to let it go and humble himself and become a man and even die so that we might have life.

So if God blesses your business and prospers you even to riches, Hold it loosely. Do not lay up for yourself treasures here on earth where moth and rust destroy and thieves can break in and steal.

But lay up for yourself treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust can destroy and where thieves cannot break in and steal. For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.
